Custom vs. Semi-Custom

A custom design is created from scratch, or modified from a base model, to be cast as a single piece. This starts with a cad drawing to build the piece with accurate dimensions, down to fractions of a millimeter.

A semi-custom design typically utilizes parts, or findings, that are manufactured and readily available from our suppliers, and which can be combined into one piece by our expert bench jeweler.

Whether or not the piece is semi-custom or custom is largely dependent on available findings and your design requirements.

Why Custom?

You may have nothing but an idea or inspiration, or you may have old, dated, or inherited jewelry with various diamonds and/or gemstones that you want to combine, or separate, into new pieces. When stones vary in size or shape, it can be difficult to find a manufactured setting you adore, let alone one that can accommodate the precise number of stones you’d like to use. With a custom design, we can build a design from scratch that perfectly and precisely meets your expectations.

You may have photos, sketches or just a vague idea of what you’d like to create, and that’s where we step in with our combined decades of design, jewelry, diamond and gemstone expertise to bring your ideas to fruition.

The Design Process

We’ll start with a meeting to discuss your ideas, goals and budget. If you have existing diamonds or gemstones that you plan to use, bring them to the meeting so that we can measure, photograph and evaluate the stones. Any sketches, photos or other inspiration you may have is also helpful, or we can browse more than 1,200 customizable styles in our catalog.

For custom designs, we’ll make CAD drawings and renderings which will look just like the finished piece, and for semi-custom designs, we’ll create a photo rendering from the manufactured parts to simulate what the final piece will look like.

Pricing is calculated based on several factors, which may include one or more of the following: amount (weight) of metal and its current market price, size/quality of new diamonds or gemstones requested, design fee, and labor costs for casting, gem setting, polishing and finishing.

Once the quote and preliminary renderings are approved, we’ll request a deposit to start the job, remove the stone(s) from your existing setting, if necessary, and apply any scrap metal value from your old piece(s) toward the price of your job.

For custom designs, our manufacturer reviews the job and provides final renderings for approval. For a precise fit, they will make any adjustments necessary for casting based on your stones. A physical 3-D resin model of the piece can also be ordered at no additional charge. Once you approve a design, custom pieces generally take 2-3 weeks to cast and complete (not including shipping time).

For semi-custom designs, we’ll order the parts and findings needed to complete the job, and build the piece based upon the rendering we created. Semi-custom designs are usually completed within 1-2 weeks.
